  • Description:
  • Tenders are invited for Consultant to Conduct Study to Determining Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (Iuu) Trade Flows and Socio-Economic Impacts in South West Indian Ocean (a Trade Perspective) The impacts of IUU fishing are not only limited to the commercial fish stocks, but also extend to the nontarget species such as sharks, cetaceans, and sea turtles, but are often not accounted for due to the limitations in data and observer coverage and unavailability of accurate data due to underreporting in the national database. These can have deleterious cascading effects on the food chain by collapsing one fishery while also putting pressure on other stocks of target and non-target species. Moreover, since small-scale/artisanal fisheries are open access, anyone can buy a boat and start fishing, without licensing and regulation of fishing nets to be used. Objective 2: The implications of DWFN in tuna and shrimp fisheries in the SWIO region This part of the study aims to gather information on EU and China DWFN presence in the region and identify any IUU fishing impacts this might create for the regional economy. Work in close consultation with Ministries responsible for fisheries, fishing authorities, private sectors (fishing associations/networks), fisheries research institutions to evaluate the environmental costs of operations of DWFN on the SWIO region, including both tuna and shrimp fisheries would be foreseen. In addition to their presence, as both EU and China are two main market States. IUU persists because it is profitable with market States allowing economic benefits from IUU operations. In addition, market opportunities for IUU products create unfair competition between law-abiding and illegal fishermen, lowering prices that legitimate fishermen can obtain for their products. This needs to be urgently tackled. In addition to capturing the impacts of fishing gears and devices used (technological advancements) including the use of drifting FADs
